Read in Conjunction with "Business Hub Building Canadian Nuclear Laboratories Mid-Rise Wood Construction Alternative Solution"
Morrison Hershfield Limited (MH) has been retained by HDR Architects to provide Code consulting services for the Business Hub Building, Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories, in Chalk River, Ontario. The scope includes documenting the application of the National Building Code (NBC) to the new building.
The Business Hub building is a new 6 storey building containing offices with supporting spaces such as meeting rooms, a data centre and library, a 200 seat auditorium with stepped seating, medical clinic, and areas for supporting amenities. The offices are located on all floors except Level 3 where the large meeting rooms serving the office use have been centralized on the same floor as the auditorium.
The original design intent was to design and construct the building as a mid-rise wood building under NBC Division B Article 188.8.131.52. Since the design does not meet several conditions of this Article, an Alternative Solution has been developed to provide the same level of performance as Division B. The building will be of mixed combustible and noncombustible construction and will feature cross laminated timber floors, walls and roof from Levels 2 to 6.
The site is sloped such that the adjoining ground level is at Level 1 on the east side of the building and at Level 2 on the west side of the building. Grade, as defined by the NBC, is therefore at Level 1. The building does not have a basement. The main entrance and Fire Department access will be at Level 2 on the west side of the building, and the Fire Department will also have access only the site road parallel to the north elevation.
