The structural use of timber coming from fast growing and low-grade species such as poplar is one of the current challenges in the wood value chains, through the development of engineering products. In this work, a qualitative comparison of the behavior of mixed glued laminated timber made of pine in their outer layers and of poplar in their inner layers is shown and discussed. Single-species poplar and pine laminated timber have been used as control layouts. The investigation includes destructive four-point bending tests and three non-destructive methodologies: finite elements numerical model; semi-analytical model based on the Parallel Axes theorem and acoustic resonance testing. An excellent agreement between experimental and numerical results is obtained. Although few number of samples have been tested, the results indicate that the use of poplar as a low-grade species in the inner layers of the laminated timber can be a promising technology to decrease the weight of the timber maintaining the good mechanical properties of pine. Likewise, the need for the use of the shear modulus in both experimental measurements and numerical analysis is suggested, as well as the need to reformulate the vibration methodology for non-destructive grading in the case of mixed timber.
Cross-laminated timber panels offer an effective option for timber structures; they allow biaxial load transfer and have good dimensional stability. However, practical transportation and handling limits size of the panel and a stiff connection between the panels is required to effectively utilise biaxial properties. In this paper, a dovetail splice joint for timber panels is presented using cross-banded LVL with cast concrete grout interlayer. The interlayer allows a tight fit, which is important for stiffness, but also avoiding installation problems due to manufacturing tolerances and moisture-induced dimensional changes. The mechanical behaviour of the dovetail joint was investigated experimentally for various geometries. Furthermore, a numerical model was developed that shows a wide agreement with the experiments, especially in the cases with governing failure in the LVL. Using the numerical model, a parameter study was performed where the influence of the connection length (number of dovetails) and the joint geometry on the strength and stiffness properties was investigated. Besides the optimal geometrical configurations of the dovetail joint, also a significant increase of the strength and stiffness properties with increasing connection length was identified.

Rolling shear (RS) strength may govern load carrying capacity of cross laminated timber (CLT) subjected to high out-of-plane loading because high RS stresses may be induced in cross layers and wood typically has low RS strength. This study investigates RS strength properties of none-edge-glued CLT via experimental testing (short-span bending tests and modified planar shear tests) and numerical modelling. CLT specimens with different manufacturing parameters including two timber species (New Zealand grown Douglas-fir and Radiata pine), three lamination thickness (20 mm, 35 mm, and 45 mm) and various lamination aspect ratios (4.1~9.8) were studied. The lamination aspect ratio was found to have a substantial impact on RS strength of CLT. Higher aspect ratios led to a significant increase of RS strength and an approximately linear relationship could be established. With similar lamination aspect ratios, the Radiata pine CLT had higher RS strength than the Douglas-fir CLT. The two different test methods, however, yielded comparable RS strength assessments. Numerical models were further developed to study the influence of the test configurations and gaps in the cross layers on stress distributions in the cross layers. It was also found the compressive stresses perpendicular to grain in cross layers had negligible influence on the RS strength evaluations.

This paper describes the numerical modelling of post-tensioned timber (Pres-Lam) frame systems under non-linear dynamic and static loading. From the conception of the post-tensioned jointed ductile concept it has been clear that the nature of its controlled rocking mechanism leant itself well to the use of a lumped plasticity approach. This approach combines the use of elastic elements with springs representing plastic rotations in the system. Two experimental testing campaigns have been used in order to confirm the effectiveness of this modelling technique in predicting both the global (frame) and local (beam-column) response of these systems.
The first of these tests was a full scale beam-column joint tested quasi-statically and the second was a 3-dimensional, 3-storey, 2/3rd scale multi-storey post-tensioned timber frame building tested dynamically. During the testing programmes the specimens were tested both with and without the addition of dissipative steel angles which were designed to yield at a certain level of drift. These steel angles release energy through hysteresis during lateral frame movement thus increasing damping. Both structures were modelled using a lumped plasticity approach with springs that were calibrated against the moment rotation design procedure used for post-tensioned timber connections.
This work has proved the adequacy of the use of two numerical modelling programs, RUAUMOKO and SAP2000, in providing accurate representation of structural response when calibrated against current design procedures. All testing was performed in the structural laboratory of the University of Basilicata in Potenza, Italy. This experimental campaign is part of a series of experimental tests in collaboration with the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand.
Structural solutions involving the mechanical interaction of timber and glass load-bearing members showed a progressive increase in the last decade. Among others, a multipurpose hybrid facade element composed of Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) members and glass panels interacting by frictional contact mechanisms only was proposed ion the framework of the VETROLIGNUM project. While demonstrating enhanced load-bearing and deformation capacity performances under seismic loads, facade elements are known to represent a building component with multiple performance parameters to satisfy. These include energy efficiency, durability, lightening comfort and optimal thermal performance. In this paper, a special focus is dedicated to the thermal performance assessment of CLT-glass facade modules under ordinary operational conditions. Based on the thermal-chamber analysis of small-scale prototypes, reliable Finite Element numerical models are developed and applied to full-scale VETROLIGNUM solution. Sensitivity analyses are hence carried out to explore the actual thermal performance of these novel hybrid systems.
The benefits of longitudinally post-tensioning in timber beams has been highlighted in several laboratory tests carried out at the University of Canterbury. However, there is still some concern about the long-term behaviour of post-tensioned engineered wood, which relates in particular to the amount of possible post-tensioning loss due to creep effects inside compressed members. For this reason, research has been conducted at the University of Canterbury including both experimental and numerical work on post-tensioned members. In the first part of this paper, the experimental results relative to four years of monitoring of post-tensioned LVL beam specimens with different tendon profiles are presented. In the second part, a coupled finite difference-finite element procedure is proposed to numerically simulate the beams behaviour. Results are then critically discussed, in particular concerning the amount of post-tensioning losses as well as creep deformations on the beams deflection.
The vibration of cross laminated timber (CLT) floor is closely related to human-induced loadings. However, research and prediction approaches regarding human-induced vibration of the CLT floor have been mostly limited to a single-person excitation condition. This paper presents new prediction approaches to the vibration response of the CLT floor under multi-person loadings. The effect of multi-person loadings on the vibration performance of a CLT floor was investigated through numerical modelling, experimental testing and analytical investigation. A finite element model was developed through a computational software to perform an accurate analysis of human-induced loadings. An analytical model was established to predict human-induced vibration of the CLT floor under multi-person loadings. Experimental tests were conducted to validate the numerical modelling. Results of both numerical modelling and experimental testing showed that the vibration performance of the CLT floor under multi-person loadings was almost double that under single-person loadings. Thus, multi-person activities are more likely to cause the occupants feelings of discomfort. A method for predicting the human-induced vibration of the CLT floor under multi-person loadings was then developed. The measured response, numerical modelled response, and predicted response were compared using an existing design metric, vibration dose value (VDV). The results were largely consistent. It is therefore concluded that the proposed prediction method will enable engineers to design timber floor systems that consider multi-person loadings.
