FPInnovations carried out a survey with consultants and researchers on the use of analytical models and software packages related to the analysis and design of mass timber buildings. The responses confirmed that a lack of suitable models and related information for material properties of timber connections was creating an impediment to the design and construction of this type of buildings. Furthermore, there is currently a lack of computer models and expertise for carrying out performance-based design for wood buildings, in particular seismic and/or fire performance design.
In this study, a sophisticated constitutive model for wood-based composite material under stress and temperature was developed. This constitutive model was programmed into a user-subroutine which can be added to most general-purpose finite element software. The developed model was validated with test results of a laminated veneer lumber (LVL) beam and glulam bolted connection under force and/or fire.
Withdrawal properties of axially-loaded groups of screws in the narrow face of cross laminated timber (CLT) are investigated by means of a stochastic approach based on a single screw model which provides a complete stochastic description of the load-displacement curve. Different group dimensions and configurations are analysed, featuring screws with equal or different thread-fibre angles. The stochastic approach is successfully verified by tests. Influences caused by shortcomings in assembling and by screws penetrating knots as well as gaps are addressed. Suggestions, relevant for the development of CLT system connectors and for practical applications, are made.
In this paper, the results of lateral loading tests on two types of CLT shear wall systems with an opening are summarized, one is the shear wall system with assembling narrow size CLT panels and another is that using one large size panel with an opening. 8 types, 13 specimens in all were tested. Load-displacement curves were obtained and characteristic values of shear performance were derived. As a result, the assembly system revealed higher ductility because of the ductility of connections between panels, while the rapture of large panel system was brittle though the shear capacity was higher than the assembly system.
