Summary
Cross-laminated timber, also known as X-Lam or CLT, is well established in Europe as a construction material. Recently, implementation of X-Lam products and systems has begun in countries such as Canada, United States, Australia and New Zealand. So far, no relevant design codes for X-Lam construction were published in Europe, therefore an extensive research on the field of cross-laminated timber is being performed by research groups in Europe and overseas. Experimental test results are required for development of design methods and for verification of design models accuracy. This thesis is part of a large research project on the development of a software for the modelling of CLT structures, including analysis, calculation, design and verification of connections and panels. It was born as collaboration between Padua University and Barcelona"s CIMNE (International Centre for Numerical Methods in Engineering). The research project started with the thesis “Una procedura numerica per il progetto di edifici in Xlam” by Massimiliano Zecchetto, which develops a software, using MATLAB interface, only for 2D linear elastic analysis. Follows the phase started in March 2015, consisting in extending the 2D software to a 3D one, with the severity caused by modelling in three dimensions. This phase is developed as a common project and described in this thesis and in “Pre-process for numerical analysis of Cross Laminated Timber Structures” by Alessandra Ferrandino. The final aim of the software is to enable the modelling of an X-Lam structure in the most efficient and reliable way, taking into account its peculiarities. Modelling of CLT buildings lies into properly model the connections between panels. Through the connections modelling, the final aim is to enable the check of preliminarily designed connections or to find them iteratively, starting from hypothetical or random connections. This common project develops the pre-process and analysis phases of the 3D software that allows the automatic modelling of connections between X-Lam panels. To achieve the goal, a new problem type for GiD interface and a new application for KRATOS framework have been performed. The problem type enables the user to model a CLT structure, starting from the creation of the geometry and the assignation of numeric entities (beam, shell, etc.) to geometric ones, having defined the material, and assigning loads and boundary conditions. The user does not need to create manually the connections, as conversely needs for all commercial FEM software currently available; he just set the connection properties to the different sides of the panels. The creation of the connections is made automatically, keeping into account different typologies of connections and assembling of Cross-Lam panels. The problem type is special for XLam structures, meaning that all features are intentionally studied for this kind of structures and the software architecture is planned for future developments of the postprocess phase. It can be concluded that sound bases for the pre-process and analysis phases of the software have been laid. However, future research is required to develop the postprocess and verification phases of the research project.

The CLT Handbook provides vital “How to” information on CLT for the design and construction community, and is a great source of information for regulatory authorities, fire services and others. The CLT Handbook is also a good textbook for university level timber engineering courses. In summary, the Canadian CLT Handbook will remain the most comprehensive reference for sharing the latest technical information on North American CLT. The Canadian edition of the CLT Handbook, first published in 2011 under the Transformative Technologies Program of the Natural Resources Canada, played an imperative role in accelerating the use and acceptance of CLT in North America. Its introduction subsequently led to the publication of the US Edition. The Canadian Edition supported the early use of CLT products from Canadian manufacturers in many small to large projects across Canada and the US, and paved the way for CLT and other wood products to be used in new applications like tall and large buildings, and bridges. Since then, additional research has taken place globally and substantial regulatory changes have occurred enabling more wood to be used in construction. Those developments highlighted a need for the CLT Handbook to be updated. The 2019 Edition of the CLT Handbook, for example, augments the recently developed CLT provisions in CSA Standard in Engineering Design in Wood and it includes a design example of an 8-storey CLT building. It helps expand the knowledge base of the designers about CLT enabling them to develop alternative solutions for taller and larger buildings that are beyond the boundaries of the acceptable solutions in building codes.

The widely available automated prefabrication in timber construction companies, as well as modern CAD software with application programing interfaces, allow for the design and production of increasingly geometrically complex building components. This development also enables and demands at the same time advanced joinery techniques. Analog to the developments in timber framing, this article presents the adaptation of a traditional wood-wood joinery technique from cabinetmaking, on the casestudy of a shell structure built from curved cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels. The dovetail-joints allow for a load-bearing glued joint between the CLT panels. They provide an aesthetic, visible connection and simplify the assembly through their integrated locator features.

Summary
The overall goal of this project is to enable the use of cross laminated timber (CLT) to construct commercial and other non-residential buildings in High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ). The 1992 Hurricane Andrew exposed the shortcomings of existing building codes. Recognizing this shortcomings, the Florida Building Code (FBC) incorporated new enhanced provisions which specifically require that the entire building envelope, including the wall and roof systems, must be impact resistant in HVHZ. Currently, CLT is not in the database of a list of building envelope products that comply with the HVHZ standard. The specific objectives of this project are (1) to qualify PRG-320 compliance CLT panels for HVHZ standard by conducting FBC debris impact and wind pressure cyclic tests; (2) to conduct education and outreach sessions to promote the use of CLT in HVHZ, and (3) to identify possible construction projects that may utilize CLT as the building envelope and promote the use of CLT in those projects. The test results generated in this project will be used specifically to gain HVHZ building code approval.

Summary
This project identifies drivers for, and barriers to, the increased use of prefabricated timber building (PTB) systems in Class 2 to 9 commercial buildings, such as apartments, hotels, office buildings and schools. PTB systems in Australia are in a formative stage and yet to achieve broad acceptance in the marketplace as a conventional method of building. Opportunities for PTB systems can use timber’s well-established benefits such as high strength-to-weight ratio; design and construction flexibility; general environmental credentials including carbon sequestration; and prefabrication’s suitability for use on brown-field, restricted access and difficult sites and developments. In addition legislative constraints have now been largely removed (e.g. through changes to the 2016 National Construction Code). An increase in large scale mid-rise prefabricated buildings, and with the increasing nationalisation and internationalisation of the top tier building companies, suggests market acceptance will grow as PTB buildings are seen as ‘normal’.

Summary
This paper begins with an overview of the state of the art in the design of multi-story mass timber structures and their lateral systems in low to moderate seismic regions. Boston, MA has been chosen as the location for a feasibility analysis of 8-, 12-, and 18- story mass timber structures. These building prototypes are used to compare the structural and environmental efficiencies and tradeoffs of replacing conventional concrete cores with mass timber braced frames and steel-timber hybrid frames. The lateral resistance of prototype configurations is evaluated through numerical analyses to understand in more detail the characteristics of an efficient mass timber lateral system. Finding an optimal timber gravity system configuration is followed by examining lateral resistance of the prototypes. The resulting designs demonstrate a practical approach to assist designers in selecting a lateral system during the early stages of conceptual design. This research was conducted in parallel with a related study for implementation of mass timber in affordable housing in Boston, enabling a comparison between composite systems and all-timber structures.
