The Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology Arts and Media building was completed in 2011 and consists of three seismically separate complexes. This research focussed on the Arts building as it showcases the use of coupled post-tensioned timber shear walls. These are part of the innovative Expan system. Full-scale, in-situ dynamic testing of the novel building was combined with finite element modelling and updating to obtain an understanding of the structural dynamic performance within the linear range. Ambient testing was performed at three stages during construction and was combined with forced vibration testing for the final stage. This forms part of a larger instrumentation program developed to investigate the wind and seismic response and long term deformations of the building. A finite element model of the building was formulated and updated using experimental modal characteristics. It was shown that the addition of non-structural elements, such as cladding and the staircase, increased the natural frequency of the first mode and the second mode by 19% and 24%, respectively. The addition of the concrete floor topping as a structural diaphragm significantly increased the natural frequency of the first mode but not the second mode, with an increase of 123% and 18%, respectively. The elastic damping of the NMIT building at low-level vibrations was identified as being between 1.6% and 2.4%
Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is an engineered wood material that was introduced in the last decade as a promising candidate for building wood structures higher than 10 stories. Thus far, a handful of tall residential CLT buildings have been built in low seismic regions around the world. Previous full-scale seismic shaking table tests of multistory CLT buildings revealed that this system is susceptible to overturning damage as a result of lateral seismic loads. To effectively resist overturning, a new floor connection detail was proposed to engage CLT floor panels as coupling elements for CLT shearwall stacks in the building floor plan. This approach is fundamentally different from traditional isolated shearwall stack design methods used in multistory light-framed wood buildings. The proposed method was illustrated through the seismic design of a 12-story CLT building located in Los Angeles, California, which was then subjected to the design equivalent lateral force to evaluate the conservativeness in the proposed simplified calculation.
As global interest in using engineered wood products in tall buildings intensifies due to the “green” credential of wood, it is expected that more tall wood buildings will be designed and constructed in the coming years. This, however, brings new challenges to the designers. One of the major challenges is how to design lateral load-resisting systems (LLRSs) with sufficient stiffness, strength, and ductility to resist strong wind and earthquakes. In this study, an LLRS using mass timber panel on a stiff podium was developed for high-rise buildings in accordance with capacity-based design principle. The LLRS comprises eight shear walls with a core in the center of the building, which was constructed with structural composite lumber and connected with dowel-type connections and wood–steel composite system. The main energy dissipating mechanism of the LLRS was detailed to be located at the panel-to-panel interface. This LLRS was implemented in the design of a hypothetical 20-storey building. A finite element (FE) model of the building was developed using general-purpose FE software, ABAQUS. The wind-induced and seismic response of the building model was investigated by performing linear static and non-linear dynamic analyses. The analysis results showed that the proposed LLRS using mass timber was suitable for high-rise buildings. This study provided a valuable insight into the structural performance of LLRS constructed with mass timber panels as a viable option to steel and concrete for high-rise buildings.
This paper presents a study on the seismic design of hybrid multi-storey wood buildings made of CLT and Light-Frame shear walls acting at the same level. Within the framework of the force-based method, the aim of this study is to propose a simple formulation in order to establish the value of the q-factor of the hybrid system which could be also implemented in seismic design codes such as Eurocode 8. This was achieved by analysing the results of nonlinear dynamic (time-history) analyses performed on a four storey case-study building with different combinations of CLT and Light-Frame shear walls.
Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is gaining popularity in residential and non-residential applications in the North American construction market. CLT is very effective in resisting lateral forces resulting from wind and seismic loads. This research investigated the in-plane performance of CLT shear wall for platform-type buildings under lateral loading. Analytical models were proposed to estimate the in-plane stiffness of CLT wall panels with openings based on experimental and numerical investigations. The models estimate the in-plane stiffness under consideration of panel thickness, aspect ratios, and size and location of the openings. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to reduce the number of model parameters to those that have a significant impact on the stiffness reduction of CLT wall panels with openings. Finite element models of CLT wall connections were developed and calibrated against experimental tests. The results were incorporated into models of CLT single and coupled shear walls. Finite element analyses were conducted on CLT shear walls and the results in terms of peak displacements, peak loads and energy dissipation were in good agreement when compared against full-scale shear wall tests. A parametric study on single and coupled CLT shear walls was conducted with variation of number and type of connectors. The seismic performance of 56-single and 40-coupled CLT shear walls’ assembles for platform-type construction were evaluated. Deflection formulas were proposed for both single and coupled CLT shear walls loaded laterally in-plane that in addition to the contributions of CLT panels and connections, also account for the influence of adjacent perpendicular walls and floors above and illustrated with examples. Analytical equations were proposed to calculate the resistance of CLT shear walls accounting for the kinematic behaviour of the walls observed in experimental investigations (sliding, rocking and combined sliding-rocking) and illustrated with examples. Different configurations (number and location of hold-downs) of single and coupled CLT walls were considered. The findings presented in this thesis will contribute to the scientific body of knowledge and furthermore will be a useful tool for practitioners for the successful seismic design of CLT platform buildings in-line with the current CSA O86 provisions.
Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is a relatively new type of massive timber system that has shown to possess excellent mechanical properties and structural behavior in building construction. When post-tensioned with high-strength tendons, CLT panels perform well under cyclic loadings because of two key characteristics: their rocking behavior and self-centering capacity. Although post-tensioned rocking CLT panels can carry heavy gravity loads, resist lateral loads, and self-center after a seismic event, they are heavy and form a pinched hysteresis, thereby limiting energy dissipation. Conversely, conventional light-frame wood shear walls (LiFS) provide a large amount of energy dissipation from fastener slip and, as their name implies, are lightweight, thereby reducing inertial forces during earthquakes. The combination of these different lateral behaviors can help improve the performance of buildings during strong ground shaking, but issues of deformation compatibility exist. This study presents the results of a numerical study to examine the behavior of post-tensioned CLT walls under cyclic loadings. A well-known 10-parameter model was applied to simulate the performance of a CLT-LiFS hybrid system. The posttensioned CLT wall model was designed on the basis of a modified monolithic beam analogy that was originally developed for precast concrete-jointed ductile connections. Several tests on post-tensioned CLT panels and hybrid walls were implemented at the Large Scale Structural Lab at the University of Alabama to validate the numerical model, and the results showed very good agreement with the numerical model. Finally, incremental dynamic analysis on system level models was compared with conventional light-frame wood system models.
Figure 1 shows a floor plan and elevation along with the preliminary shear wall locations for a sixstorey wood-frame building. It is assumed some preliminary calculations have been provided to determine the approximate length of wall required to resist the lateral seismic loads.
If the preliminary design could not meet the drift limit requirement using the base shear obtained based on the actual period, the shear walls should be re-designed until the drift limit requirement is satisfied.

This paper deals with a contemporary integrated and sustainable construction technology for new residential buildings. Specifically, this research aims at developing innovative steel-timber hybrid structures which allow a rapid assembly of the individual prefabricated components, minimizing the construction times and limiting the costs of the work. The numerical analyses performed on a multi-storey building for social housing will be presented and discussed. The in-plane behaviour of the floors and shear walls will be analysed, considering in particular the types and arrangement of the different timber- and steel-timber joints. The connections to be used among the construction elements will be selected in order to develop a sufficient stiffness, ductility and bearing capacity according to the design criteria for seismic-resistant structures. These connections allow to enhance the on-site assembly operations, therefore working effectively also under harsh climatic conditions.
